Caught Neil deGrasse Tyson on The Daily Show recently, promoting a new season of NOVA Science on PBS, and he had this to say:
When you are on the frontier of knowledge, between what is known and what is unknown, reaching out into that abyss, sometimes you actually have to make stuff up that might be true, so that you can organize a research plan to find out whether or not it is. This is the creativity of discovery.Beautifully put.
