Golden Globes 2014 Nominations Predix: It's Angie time ... No, no, it isn't.

submit to reddit

It doesn't feel right to miss the award season, no matter that I'm just whipping predictions off last minute. So I'm doing it again this year, despite not having posted anything of note recently.

My special guest, Griz, once again helpfully contributes (in purple). Actual nominations tomorrow morning will be in red. It's a pretty wild-card year, so anything could go!

Post announcement comments:

Griz: Unbroken snubbed! No star-f*ckery nomination for Jolie. Her not getting in for Maleficent is almost shocking. It seemed like the perfect Golden Globes celebrity-suck-up nomination. Maybe they’re actively trying to clean up their act? Their picks this year seem unusually respectable. Wes Anderson for best director, what a fun pick! I hope the movie can make a good showing at the Oscars, at least a screenplay nomination and some tech stuff (art direction, costumes, cinematography).

Editor: First of all, yay to Budapest's success! The Anderson's directing nod was entirely wanted but unexpected. And Ralph Fiennes hopefully can use this to spring forward to the Oscars? Secondly, I, too, was puzzled about this Jolie shut out. Not that I thought she was deserving either way, as I have not seen both Maleficent and Unbroken to comment on their quality (and unlikely to do so?). But this is the Hollywood Foreign Press! Don't they want to please one of the biggest, most glamorous stars in Hollywood? I mean, they nominated Madonna! In any case, that was the biggest shocker for me (the second being the completely mind boggling Foreign Film nominations, and the inconsequential but shocking snub of "Everything is Awesome"). Thirdly, what the heck is with Pride? I don't understand nominating a film for best picture and giving it no love in any other category. So it's mediocre in everything, yet comes out on top? Judging by the nom tally and placement, Gone Girl should've been nom'd in its place. And I'm pretty sure it would have been, if not for the fact that it was placed in the stronger Drama category instead of Comedy (how did Big Eyes get into Comedy again? It also had more noms than Pride!).

Fourthly, check out all the lone-actress nominations! It's an epidemic! Is it a case of actresses not being able to get their films nominated as well, or that they're so good that they'd get nominated regardless of how crappy/mediocre their films are? Speaking of actresses: it's the year of Julianne Moore! I should've put that as my title instead of Jolie (note to self: remember for the Oscars). Finally, poor Interstellar. It deserved more than the lone score nomination, though I suppose it's better than nothing. And I'm sure that if I'd seen Inherent Vice, I'd probably find the snub intolerable. I can't wait for the movie to come out. It looks delish.

Go Interstellar! You can do it! It's not a North American prize! It's the Hollywood FOREIGN Press! Also, I have a hard time believing Unbroken or Selma would make it - for different reasons, of course. I'm taking Unbroken out based on the ad assault I have had to endure for the movie EVERYDAY (so, really, not a very good reason). We'll see if I'm wrong and everyone else is right soon enough. AHA! I was RIGHT! (about Unbroken)!

I'm betting against Selma because I assume the HFPA is, uh, not American. Bradley Cooper is. And, why not Channning Tatum? This time, he's even in a serious, non-stripping role!

ACTOR (COMEDY/MUSICAL)
Ralph Fiennes - The Grand Budapest Hotel
Michael Keaton - Birdman
Bill Murray - St. Vincent
Joaquin Phoenix - Inherent Vice

Alt: Mark Ruffalo - Begin Again

Not sure about Waltz, because apparently comedy is a dubious category for Big Eyes, and Waltz may go Supporting. But I'm not willing to put Chris Pratt. Griz is on board the year's blockbuster, apparently.
